Indigenous Magnetic Resonance Imaging system
Medical Electronics

The project titled "Indigenous Magnetic Resonance Imaging (IMRI) – A National Mission (Swadeshi Chumbakiya Anu-naad Chitran – Ek Rashtriya Abhiyaan) (SCAN-ERA)" was initiated at SAMEER in December 2014 with the objective of designing, developing, and testing an indigenous 1.5 Tesla MRI system for medical imaging. SAMEER, along with its collaborating institutes, has successfully developed all the necessary sub-modules including the Coil, FPGA Spectrometer, 16kW Amplifier, Pulse sequence generation module, and GUI consisting of Image Reconstruction Module and Image virtualization Module. These sub-components have undergone testing and integration with a procured 1.5Tesla Super-conducting Magnet, along with the Gradient Coil, resulting in the acquisition of images from the integrated system. The fine-tuning of the images is currently in progress. Animal trials for small animals have been completed, and volunteer human trials are currently underway. The development of the Indian Magnet is in its final stages, and once completed, the indigenous sub-systems will be integrated with it.
In the meantime, SAMEER published an Expression of Interest (EOI) to engage Indian industries in the manufacturing of an Indian MRI. Through the EOI process, a total of 11 industries were shortlisted, and out of these 11 industries, 9 have been selected for final engagement. The signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) with these industries will take place soon.

Design and Development of a Microwave Based Compact Cost effective Brix Meter for Sugar Industry

°Brix is a measurement of sugar solution concentration and is required in many food processes including sugar production, fruit juice processing, soft drink production etc. °Brix is defined as the percentage of sucrose by weight in a solution. This project is about the non destructive Brix measurement of the syrup for sugar industry during the crystallization process. All the development and demonstration of the project was achieved successfully and the project will soon be closed. Work on floating EOI for ToT of indigenous Brix meter is ongoing.

Indian MRI system specifications:

Sr. No Parameter Targeted value
1 Operating Frequency 5.81/2.45 GHz
2 Transmission Power < 10 mW
3 Measured Parameter Attenuation and Phase Shift
4 Measurement Method Transmission Based
5 Range of Brix measurement 50 ºBrix to 95 ºBrix
6 Accuracy ± 0.2 ºBrix
7 Interface RS232

Development of dielectric heating based processing technologies for solid-wood, bamboo and their composites

Concentrated efforts are required to develop efficient and indigenous wood processing technologies in response to the increasing investments by multinational wood-based industries in India. The application of DH technology has the potential to enhance the dimensional stability and decay resistance of wood, thereby improving the lifespan of wooden products. While extensive research has been conducted in developed countries on RF drying of wood, there is currently no available data on the drying behavior of Indian Hardwoods using RF & MW systems.

SAMEER has made significant progress in the development of dielectric heating-based processing technologies for solid wood and a bamboo project. The objective of the project is to design and develop cutting-edge vacuum-assisted radio frequency drying system for wood curing, a microwave-based online moisture measurement system for wood and forestry products, and a microwave-based bamboo processing system. The project has three main deliverables:

  • Moisture meter for measurement of moisture in wood and bamboo
  • Developing protocols for bamboo straightening and/or bending using MW
  • Design and develop RF/MW based wood processing systems

Specifications:
